Volunteer Job Descriptions

There are many different types of volunteer opportunities. For an overview of volunteering at PAWS, see the Volunteer Overview section. Also, see our Volunteer Now section for current volunteer opportunities. For a listing of current volunteer opportunities, events and PAWS happenings, see our Calendar section.

Dog Walking
Volunteers on dog walking teams help walk dogs for those who are bed-bound or home-bound. We make an effort to pair volunteers up with clients who either live near them, or near where they work. You would then go to that client's home once per week on a regular schedule (e.g. Tuesdays at 7pm), take the dog out for a walk, and then come back the next week at the same time. A general rule of thumb is that walks should last at least 45 minutes, but it depends on the health and ability of the dog. Volunteers are expected to walk the dog at least once per week, for a minimum six-month commitment. Dog-walking Volunteers must be at least 18 years old, or accompanied by a parent who is also a registered PAWS Volunteer.

Cat Care
Volunteers on cat care teams clean cat pans for clients who are unable to clean the pan. Volunteers are responsible for one cleaning a week unless otherwise arranged. Similar to dog-walking, we try to pair volunteers up with clients who either live near them or near where they work. There is a minimum commitment of six months, and an age minimum of 18.

Other In-home Animal Care
While they are rare we will sometimes have requests for in-home help with other pets, doing things like cleaning bird cages, cleaning fish tanks, etc.

Food Bank
Each week we distribute pet food, leashes, cat litter, toys and other supplies to our clients. The Food Bank is located at the PAWS office, 645 Harrison St. Ste 100, and is open from 10:30am to 12:30pm every Saturday morning.
Volunteers assist in three ways:

*Onsite Volunteers work in the Food Bank from 10:00am-12:30pm assisting clients with their orders of food and helping the clients out to their cars, if need be.
*Delivery Drivers drive their own cars, and go to 6-9 different homes, delivering boxes of pet food to homebound clients.
*Delivery Riders go with the delivery drivers, helping to navigate, and bringing the boxes of food inside while the driver waits with his/her car.

Food Bank volunteers generally commit to one Saturday per month (e.g. the 3rd Saturday of each month).

Nail Clipping
Once per month, the PAWS office sets up a nail-clipping clinic. PAWS is looking for volunteers who can assist with this clinic. They would either hold the animals while their nails are being clipped, or clip the nails while someone else holds them.

PAWS also needs volunteers who can go to clients homes to clip nails, for clients who are unable to bring their own animals to the nail-clipping clinic.

Foster Care
Our clients are often sick and need hospital care. During these times we help by providing foster care and adoption services for their pets. We are constantly in need of volunteers with pet-friendly apartments to assist in fostering pets. This would involve a dog or cat coming to your home for a few days or a few weeks until the owner is able to return home and reclaim his/her animal. PAWS will provide the food and cover expenses.

Adoption
WE ARE NOT AN ADOPTION SERVICE, however under the emergency circumstance of a client passing away or permanently going into hospice that prohibits animals, we offer adoption as a service. For a listing of pets available for foster care and adoption, please see our Foster/Adopt a Pet section.

Office Work
The PAWS office often has needs for volunteers who can assist in the office.

We are currently in need of someone who can do internet research for the Education Department, updating our files for service providers, vet schools, housing organizations, etc. We need someone who has good skills with Google and Microsoft Excel.

Office volunteers would need to be available during the workweek. The PAWS office is open weekdays 10am to 6pm.

Pet Transportation
Our pets need your help to get to their vet or grooming appointment. PAWS volunteers with cars can help by providing the transportation. Appointments are generally during the work week, so we are mostly looking for volunteers who have daytime availability

Food Donation Delivery
Often PAWS will need help picking up donated items or taking donated items to our food bank. If you have a car or truck transportation of pet supplies is one great way that you can help.

Fundraising Events
PAWS is constantly looking for help organizing and running its fundraisers. For more on PAWS current fundraising events, see our Special Events section.

Outreach Staffing
PAWS is always looking to spread the word about our organization, to bring in more clients, volunteers and donors, and to further the knowledge that the public has about pets with disabled owners, service animals, and the human-animal bond.

PAWS needs volunteers who can sit at information tables at street fairs, animal events, pet stores, parks, busy street corners, and other places to hand out information about PAWS and its programs, and to further awareness of the organization.

Outreach volunteers are most needed for Saturday and Sunday events, but occasionally for evenings, and during the workday.
