Volunteer Services Internship

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - At Pets Are Wonderful Support (PAWS), we work with people with disabilities to help maintain their pets. PAWS is currently seeking an intern to be part of the volunteer services department. This internship will help someone learn basic skills of volunteer management, with additional skills in public relations, community outreach, and interaction with people with disabilities. - - - - This is an experiential, hands-on program. Externs will engage in a project at the PAWS office, participate in the PAWS Pet Food Bank, and give a public presentation at the completion of their externship. In the past, student projects have included helping to plan an international PAWS conference, surveying human-animal bond professionals nationwide, and assisting in the development of pilot programs. In addition, students have opportunities to participate in outreach programs with the San Francisco SPCA, mobile veterinary services to homeless camps in San Francisco, and volunteer at local veterinary clinics. Students in their 3rd and 4th years preferred. Two externship students are selected yearly based on their letter of interest, background/ C.V., and letters of recommendation. Externship possibilities are available in the Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall 2006. A stipend of $1000.00 is provided to cover travel and other miscellaneous expenses. Usually, housing is available through PAWS volunteers; however, we are not able to guarantee housing. The deadline

For more on the PAWS Veterinary Externship program, see our Intern/Extern Program section. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 2007 Public Health Externship The PAWS (Pets Are Wonderful Support) Public Health Externship Program is a 1 month externship at the PAWS San Francisco office. The goals of this program are to promote public education on the health benefits and risks of animal companionship, to train and educate future leaders in the human and medical professions who will have an impact in the field of the human-animal bond, and to foster communication and cooperation between the human and veterinary medical communities. The supervised
externship involves the completion of a short term research project, public speaking
experiences, interactions with the local public health and veterinary communities,
direct interaction with clients and PAWS staff members, experience in the daily
operations of a nationally known non-profit organization, and participation at
the PAWS Food Bank. In addition, students have opportunities to participate in
outreach programs with a mobile veterinary service to homeless camps in San Francisco,
and volunteer at local veterinary clinics. Masters candidates
preferred. Two externship students are selected yearly based on their letter of
interest, background/ C.V., and letters of recommendation. Externship possibilities
