Keeping Pets and People Together

At PAWS, we intuitively understand the healing power of the human-animal bond and the life-changing effects of a pet's unconditional love.  But behind that intuition there exists a huge body of research and study.  To support our work to keep people together with their pets, the PAWS Education Program provides the following services:

  • Original research and publications, including Safe Pet Guidelines to help reduce the risk of zoonoses, the spreading of diseases from pets to people.  All original publications are available to download, free of charge, in our online library.

  • An externship program that brings veterinary students and Masters of Public Health (MPH) students onsite to participate in research projects and hands-on work with our clients and their pets.

  • Information and referrals for important resources and organizations that support the human-animal bond.  Here is where you can find information on free and low-cost spay & neuter options, additional resources for low-income and/or disabled animal guardians, as well as general guidance and support.

  • library of journal articles and books that look at all aspects of the human-animal bond, especially the health benefits of companion animals.

  • Technical assistance and support, including a fully revised start-up kit, for people who want to start a PAWS-type organization in their own community.

  • Free guidance for pet-related landlord/tenant issues through PAWS' Client Advocacy program.
