PAWS Is Joining Forces With Shanti!

We're excited to share some big news! PAWS will be merging with The Shanti Project (Shanti), a San Francisco-based nonprofit dedicated to the health, quality of life and well-being of people living with life-threatening illnesses. The combined organization will be able to serve clients with stronger and more sustainable resources.

The newly-formed organization will retain the Shanti name and PAWS will become a program of the merged organization. PAWS services will continue from our current location in the Mission District and the merged organization will retain ownership of the current PAWS building.

“We’re thrilled to bring PAWS into the Shanti family, which will provide continuity and a strong financial base from which both organizations will benefit,” said Frank Petkovich, board chair for Shanti. “PAWS’ work complements Shanti’s efforts to provide emotional and practical support to vulnerable individuals across San Francisco.”

The two nonprofits offer a combined history of nearly 70 years of service to the San Francisco Bay Area.  Over the years, Shanti has expanded from its base of serving people with HIV to include service to women with breast and other types of cancer. Having grown rapidly in recent years, Shanti will operate with an annual budget of $4.1 million for fiscal year 2015-16 following the merger.

“Improving the lives of people who depend on our services is paramount to Shanti’s mission,” said Kaushik Roy, executive director at Shanti. “Combining our efforts with PAWS means we’ll make a more meaningful impact for those supported by both organizations.”

“People who rely on Shanti for human support often receive daily compassion from their pets,” said Scott Jacobs, PAWS Board Chair. “All safety net service organizations need to give thought to long-term sustainability and how most effectively to provide services to the community. Shanti and PAWS have wonderful mission compatibility and we are thrilled with the merger.”

Among the changes:

  • Volunteer operations will be combined, allowing people from both organizations to participate in myriad opportunities.
  • All current board members from both organizations will be invited to join the board of the new Shanti.
  • All current, full-time staff members from both organizations will be offered positions with the merged organization. Katherine D’Amato, current PAWS director of client services, will continue to supervise PAWS service delivery as the PAWS program director at Shanti.
  • Donors will be able to designate which program their gifts will support.

ABOUT THE SHANTI PROJECT

Founded in 1974, The Shanti Project (Shanti) exists to enhance the health, quality of life and well-being of people living with life-threatening illnesses. Each year, Shanti serves more than 2,000 women and men with HIV/AIDS or breast cancer, many of whom are low-income and medically underserved. Shanti provides culturally and linguistically competent Care Navigation, basic in-home assistance (including practical and emotional support through trained staff and long-term volunteer care-givers), as well as health education, wellness and survivorship classes and events. For many clients, Shanti is the sole care advocate during an extreme time of need.
